December 30, 2024Amplifying Voices, Leading the Way: Celebrating International Day for Persons with Disabilities
At Consumer Advocacy Empowerment Foundation (CADEF), we believe in a future where everyone has a voice and equal opportunities. This commitment is at the heart of our work with Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). From groundbreaking digital financial literacy programs to advocating for a PWD Bill of Rights and supporting youth-led renewable energy innovations, we are dedicated to creating a more inclusive and sustainable world.
This International Day for Persons with Disabilities, we reaffirm our commitment and share highlights of our recent efforts to amplify the leadership of PWDs.
CADEF’s Impact:
- Digital Financial Literacy: We recently empowered over 100 PWDs with crucial digital financial skills, equipping them to manage their finances effectively and protect themselves from fraud. This initiative uncovered systemic challenges faced by PWDs in the banking sector.
- Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement: In response to these challenges, we convened vital stakeholder meetings bringing together PWD associations, banks, fintech companies, and the Central Bank of Nigeria. These discussions fostered commitments to improve accessibility within financial systems, including dedicated customer service desks, interpreters, and accessible ATMs.
- Pushing for a Bill of Rights: Building on this momentum, we are actively advocating for a PWD Bill of Rights in partnership with FCCPC, pushing for systemic changes that ensure equal opportunities and accessibility for PWDs nationwide. This includes advocating for accessible banking infrastructure and dedicated support systems within financial institutions.
- Radio Engagement: To further amplify the conversation, CADEF participated in a radio program on Rhythm 93.7 FM. represented by Filibus Dauda and Kosisochukwu Ndukwe. They discussed the importance of PWD leadership and CADEF’s ongoing initiatives.
Key Highlights from the Radio Interview:
The radio program focused on the theme “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.” Here are some key takeaways:

- CADEF’s Contribution: We highlighted our work in promoting accessibility and inclusion, particularly our digital financial literacy program and advocacy efforts within the financial sector.
- Challenges and Solutions: We discussed the challenges PWDs face in leadership, including societal stigma, inaccessible infrastructure, and limited opportunities. We emphasized the need for society to move beyond passive empathy to proactive inclusion through accessible infrastructure, inclusive policies, and mentorship programs.
- Call to Action: We encouraged listeners to support PWD-focused organizations, advocate for inclusive policies, and create opportunities for PWDs in their communities.
