CADEF at the Advocacy Campaign on Wetlands Conservation—Awareness Initiative For Wetlands Conservation

Wetlands, often called the “kidneys of the Earth,” cover 6% of the planet’s land surface and play a critical role in supporting human health, food security, and livelihoods. However, these vital ecosystems are disappearing three times faster than forests, posing a significant threat to countless species and communities.

To address this pressing issue, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources organized an advocacy and awareness campaign on wetlands and biodiversity conservation on December 4, 2024. The event took place at the Lagos State Chamber of Commerce (LCCI), Ikeja. The campaign emphasized the urgent need for collective action to preserve these critical ecosystems.

Key Highlights:

• Expert Contributions: Professor Alabi Sonye of the University of Lagos and Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, Special Advisor to the Governor, spoke on wetlands’ roles in water regulation, flood control, and biodiversity conservation.
• Community Concerns: Community leaders highlighted challenges such as weak policy enforcement, government accountability, and illegal activities degrading wetlands.
• Call to Action: The campaign called for stronger wetlands protection policies, community-based monitoring programs, public awareness campaigns, and sustainable development practices. Participants were encouraged to report threats and work collaboratively to safeguard these ecosystems for future generations.

This initiative reinforced Lagos’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage and combating the adverse effects of climate change. CADEF remains steadfast in advocating for sustainable environmental practices and fostering community-driven solutions.
