We Took the Consumer Rights Conversation to the Airwaves!
Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF) joined the global commemoration of World Consumer Rights Day by taking the conversation to the airwaves.
Across both Rhythm 93.7 FM and Lasgidi 90.1 FM in Lagos, we addressed consumers about the presence of unsafe, counterfeit, and poorly labelled products in Nigeria’s open and digital markets.
The global context makes this conversation urgent. In December 2025, the UN General Assembly adopted its first-ever Principles for Consumer Product Safety, placing the primary responsibility for product safety firmly on businesses. Yet, an estimated 44% of UN Member States, including Nigeria, still lack adequate legal frameworks to enforce these standards. The gap between what the law says and what is practiced is where consumers pay the price.
Our representatives covered five areas during the sessions: what a truly safe product looks like, the scale of the problem in Nigeria’s markets, why safety must be built in the design before a product ever reaches a shelf, the growing risks of online shopping, where 87% of banned or recalled products have been found still available on e-commerce platforms, and what consumers can do right now to protect themselves.
In the months ahead, CADEF will engage the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to strengthen enforcement and post-market surveillance, work to make product reporting more accessible for consumers, and launch a campaign to help Nigerians shop more safely online.
