Empowering African Youth Through the greenLabs Renewable Energy Innovation Challenge

Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF), in collaboration with Jacob’s Ladder Africa (JLA) from Kenya, proudly launched the greenLabs Renewable Energy Innovation Challenge, an initiative designed to equip African youth with the skills and opportunities necessary to thrive in the fields of renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable infrastructure development. This program aligns with the global push for a greener economy, providing young Africans with access to the rapidly expanding clean energy sector.

From Applications to Finals: A Journey of Innovation

The challenge attracted over 80 applications from more than 40 institutions across Nigeria, with participants proposing creative solutions to pressing environmental challenges. The competition, which spanned three weeks of rigorous qualifying rounds, provided a platform for young innovators to showcase their ingenuity and commitment to sustainability.

The Power of Partnership

During the pitch day event Karen Chelangat From  Jacob Ladder Africa (In Kenya), highlighted the critical role of partnerships in addressing Africa’s pressing challenges. By bridging gaps in training, funding, and access to resources, CADEF and JLA are empowering young innovators (through training and funding) to overcome barriers and actively participate in the clean energy market.

CADEF Executive Director, Prof. Chiso Ndukwe Okafor, highlighted the immense potential of youth in driving the clean energy revolution. Similarly, Mrs Johnson Olusola representing Dr. Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen, the  Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Office of Environment and Water Resources, commended the initiative, emphasizing the importance of sustainable energy solutions to address pressing issues like energy shortages and waste management.

greenLabs: Empowering Changemakers for Sustainability

Program Overview

Following the pitch day all the Finalist 12 projects (made of 24 individuals) were admitted into the greenLabs Incubation Program, a 9-month journey, aimed at providing training and mentorship to the participants on the skills they need to build their businesses, considering the percentage of start-up failures across the globe, this hands-on training will provide them with the expertise they will require to maneuver the market mines that shred down start ups. the incubation period began with the Discovery Phase on November 11, 2024, this program supports innovators focused on sustainable energy solutions aligned with MDG 7: Ensuring Environmental Sustainability.
