CADEF at republica 2025 – Advocating for Digital Fairness in a Hyper-Consumer World

re:publica, held annually in Berlin, is one of Europe’s most influential conferences on digital culture, tech innovation, and social impact. In 2025, the spotlight turned to a topic that hits close to home for consumers everywhere: the hidden traps of online shopping.

In a panel titled It’s a Trap: E-Commerce & Why We Still Consume, digital experts from around the world, including CADEF’s Executive Director, Prof. Chiso Ndukwe-Okafor, explored how digital platforms use persuasive design to nudge people into constant buying.

Prof. Ndukwe-Okafor offered a vital voice from the Global South, where:

  • Digital platforms are growing rapidly,
  • Many users lack awareness of manipulative tactics, and
  • Youth, women, and persons with disabilities are often most at risk.

“There’s a growing digital divide—not just in access, but in protection. CADEF works to close that gap, through our work in championing digital financial literacy,” she said.

As an organization working at the intersection of consumer advocacy, inclusive digital finance, and responsible technology, CADEF continues to push for a more just digital economy, where every user, regardless of background, can shop smart and safely.
