Thematic Area: Energy Solutions

Nigerians often face challenges with electricity supply, including inconsistent power, estimated billing, and disconnections. The Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) exist to protect consumer rights in the energy sector. These include rights to Fair billing based on actual usage (not estimates), timely resolution of complaints, and safe and reliable electricity supply. Low awareness of these rights and weak enforcement mechanisms leaves many consumers feeling powerless. Nigeria faces a significant energy deficit, hindering economic growth and development. The potential solutions to this deficit include increased investment in renewable energy sources like solar and wind, improved grid infrastructure to reduce transmission losses, and encouraging energy efficiency through better appliances and consumer education.

There is also the need to empower consumers by educating them about their rights and providing clear complaint procedures, strengthening regulation by ensuring that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) effectively enforces consumer protection regulations, and increasing investment in renewables, transitioning to a more sustainable and reliable energy mix benefits both consumers and the environment.

Nigerians grapple with an unreliable power sector, facing inconsistent supply, estimated billing, and frequent disconnections. While the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) exist to protect consumer rights – including fair billing, timely complaint resolution, and access to safe and reliable electricity – low awareness and weak enforcement mechanisms leave many feeling powerless.

This energy deficit significantly hinders Nigeria’s economic growth. To bridge the gap, a multi-pronged approach is needed. Increased investment in renewable energy sources like solar and wind can provide a more sustainable and environmentally friendly solution. Upgrading the national grid infrastructure will reduce transmission losses, ensuring more efficient power delivery. Finally, promoting energy efficiency through better appliances and consumer education empowers citizens to make informed choices that reduce overall demand. Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF) continues to make significant strides in the Nigerian Electricity sector through consistent consumer awareness, training, advocacy, and policy enhancement initiatives.
